Andreya Triana: Right Where She Belongs
Andreya Triana’s been one busy lady of late. Having collaborated with Bonobo on a triumvirate of tracks for his ‘Black Sands’ LP, she’s back – for the time being – from touring with them, and has her own album (‘Lost Where I Belong’) dropping in August. Not only is she charmingly modest and open, she takes the time to effusively describe other artists she admires as well as complimenting my ‘James Bond’ pen (it turns out she’s also a purveyor of good quality stationery). While waiting for her to arrive, I sneaked a listen to the LP which showcases her exceptional voice; it oozes soulful qualities as well as making a further case for her increasingly prevalent sonic relationship with producer Simon Green (aka Bonobo). Lost? Not in the slightest. And Brainer was there to find out why.
Greetings Andreya. So, how’s the tour been?
Amazing and kind of a whole combination of things; tiring, exhausting, exhilarating, fantastic…annoying! You go through all of these things in this tiny little bubble. One of the highlights has definitely been the sell-out show at the Roundhouse; that was really special and…I felt really proud of Si [Green]. It was kind of like his homecoming. He’s worked really bloody hard so it was a privilege to be part of that – there was so much love! The rest of the year’s looking pretty busy to say the least. And I’ve got Glasto coming up…
…And you’re looking forward to that?
Um [pausing reticently] kind of! If you take the mud from the whole equation – I’m very excited! With the mud, I’m blasé about it!
You played at the BBC Introducing stage last year. Aforementioned mud-phobia aside, are you looking forward to going back?
Yeah, yeah definitely – it was such a big deal to me last year and I was so excited. We played in this massive tent and I think there’s about fifteen people and literally three quarters of them…my mates! There was nothing to get nervous about in the end. But [this year] I’m playing in a different stage called…Pussy Parlure.
I did notice that – I’m glad you said it rather than me!
I know! Don’t worry; it’s out there now, it’s been said – no going back!
Are you looking forward to the album coming out? I know it’s been quite a long process.
It’s been a really long time actually; it took a year or maybe it’s been done for a year – maybe I’m just merging the two years together! There wasn’t a deal on the table at that point or anything; I approached Si about doing my album and had my fingers and toes and arms crossed that he’d say yes and he said “yeah, yeah of course.” Then we did the album, we took it to Ninja and then they were like “mmm…OK, yeah!”
How was it recording the album?
It was so much fun. I’d go round to Si’s house once a week and we’d eat a dirty chicken bagel from Dalston market or whatever manner of disgusting food I could get my hands on! Haha – he might deny it but I know the truth!
