DOWNTOWN CALLING.

Wednesday saw the International Latino Film Festival play host to the premiere of an exciting new documentary entitled ‘Downtown Calling’. Focusing on New York City in the late 1970s - a period where the city was on the brink of social and economic disaster. Yet through such overwhelming strife and opposition, managed to produce a creative influx of hope and opportunity through emerging sub-cultures such as hip-hop, its burgeoning art, fashion and music scenes, which would later go onto have a lasting impact upon the rest of the world making it the cultural and artistically diverse hub it is today.

I’m a huge fan of this form of film making, in particular hip hop documentaries; Scratch, The Freshest Kids and Style Wars are among some of my all time favourites, and Downtown Calling looks set to fall into that category as director Shan Nicholson has recruited a vibrant cast including Jazzy Jay, Mos Def, DJ AM, Fab 5 Freddy, Bobbito Garcia, Daze, Henry Chalfant, Zephyr and a whole host of integral figures to guide viewers through this vital development in New York City’s cultural history.

Though no official release date has as yet been issued for Downtown Calling, you can keep up to date with all the latest developments through the film’s website.
