FLYING LOTUS: PRODUCER, DJ AND NOW… DIRECTOR
The Brainfeeder boss drops his second music video as director
So, a little while ago back at the end of January, Bilal dropped the video for his song ‘Levels’ (taken from the crooner’s latest LP ‘Airtight’s Revenge’. All very well and good, but the kicker was a certain Steven Ellison – or Flying Lotus, as he’s known to many – was the director behind the video. And it was his first video as a director. Ever.
Discussing the concept of the video, FlyLo said: “I originally wanted to keep visual themes with another video from my last LP called ‘mmhmm’ off of my last album. It featured Thundercat as an intergalactic bass player in a super strange world created by ‘Special Problems’. Since Thundercat was part of this song, I thought it could be fun to continue the visual style and feel of this space opera. In the end you have this crazy video made of so much mixed media, geek dreams and lots of love.”
Featuring Erykah Badu, Thundercat and Shafiq Husayn (the track’s producer), here it is:
Yesterday, Erykah Badu dropped the video for ‘Gone Baby, Don’t Be Long’, from her latest album: ‘New Amerykah Part II: Return of the Ankh’. Guess who directed it? Yep, FlyLo. Take a look:
Ellison’s got that whole trippy, spaced out vibe going on, and I’m digging it. Both videos are different, but the same. If you know what I mean. Does the man’s imagination know no bounds? Very cool bro.
